Jiu-Jitsu Training Rules
We’re here to make each other better — not to prove who’s toughest in the room.
- 01
Respect your training partners
Treat every partner with courtesy, regardless of their experience, age, size or ability.
- 02
Train with control
Use technique and awareness. Never intentionally injure, intimidate or recklessly endanger another person.
- 03
No slams
Never lift and slam an opponent to escape a hold. If you are picked up off the mat, protect yourself and return to the mat safely.
- 04
No jumping submissions or jumping guard
Jumping guard is prohibited, as is jumping into submissions. Pull guard safely or start on the ground by agreement with your partner.
- 05
Listen to the instructor
Follow class instructions and stop or modify an activity whenever directed.
- 06
Tap early. Respect the tap.
Tap clearly when you need to stop. Release immediately when your partner taps or the instructor calls stop.
- 07
Maintain good hygiene
Wear clean training clothing. Keep fingernails and toenails short and remove jewellery and watches.
- 08
Do not train when unwell
Do not train with open wounds, uncovered skin infections or contagious conditions. Tell the instructor about relevant concerns.
- 09
Protect the training environment
Keep the mat and shared spaces clean, tidy and safe for everyone.
- 010
Bring a positive attitude
Train to learn and to help your partners improve — not to prove who is toughest in the room.
Safety and respect are everyone’s responsibility.
If you are unsure about a technique, an injury or whether you should train, speak with the instructor before class.
