The belt journey

The Jiu-Jitsu Belt Journey

Each belt represents more than a collection of techniques. It marks a different way of solving the central problems of Jiu-Jitsu — from survival to a lifelong practice of learning.

01

White belt

Survive

Become difficult to submit and learn to survive.

White belt is the foundation: staying composed under pressure, protecting yourself and defending so well that you become very hard to submit — that safety is what allows you to relax, breathe and keep learning.

02

Blue belt

Escape

Escape pins and get back to guard.

Blue belt develops the ability to recover from bad positions. The aim is to create space, escape control and get back to your guard, where you can work and engage your opponent safely and intelligently.

03

Purple belt

Build

Use your previous skills to develop your guard play, adding sweeps and submissions.

Purple belt turns survival and recovery into a connected attacking game. Your guard becomes purposeful: creating reactions, changing position and finding controlled finishes.

04

Brown belt

Polish

Refine your skills to a degree of mastery.

Brown belt is about depth, precision and consistency. Familiar movements become sharper, transitions become more efficient and your own style becomes unmistakable.

05

Black belt

Learn

Understand how much there truly is to learn.

Black belt is not an ending. It is a deeper beginning — the point at which experience reveals the scale of the art and learning continues with greater clarity and responsibility.

The framework

Survive. Escape. Build. Polish. Learn.

The belts create direction, but development is never perfectly linear. Every stage returns to the lessons before it, and every practitioner continues refining the same essential ideas.
